A Deadlock Handling Method for Automated Manufacturing Systems

چکیده

Deadlock-free operation is a principal requirement for an automated manufacturing system. The part types passing through the manufacturing system are characterized by the sequence of the manufacturing resources required for their completion. The method partitions the sequence into alternate subsequences consisting of deadlock-free resources and deadlock-risk resources. The set of deadlock-free resources is shown. The proposed method introduces a novel structural on-line control policy which guarantees that the execution of an operation representing an elementary step of a job relating to a part does not lead to deadlock. The proposed policy is suitable for implementation in modern distributed manufacturing control systems due to the low on-line computational costs.

A coloured Petri net model for automated storage and retrieval systems serviced by rail-guided vehicles: a control perspective

An Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) automatically stores incoming material and retrieves stored parts with no direct human handling. This paper proposes a modular and unified modelling framework for heterogeneous automated storage and retrieval systems, comprising rail guided vehicles and narrow aisle cranes. We employ coloured timed Petri nets, representing a concise and computat...

On the use of automated guided vehicles in flexible manufacturing systems

In manufacturing systems, material transport plays a key role for production process efficiency. Because of their advantages over other material handling systems such as conveyors and robots, AGVs are widely used in flexible manufacturing systems. The scheduling of several AGVs in a non-conflicting manner is a complicated problem, especially when the AGV system is bi-directional. In fact, many ...

Design Guidelines for Deadlock-Handling Strategies in Flexible Manufacturing Systems

Deadlock-free operation of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) is an important goal of manufacturing systems control research. In this work, we develop the criteria that real-time FMS deadlock-handling strategies must satisfy. These criteria are based on a digraph representation of the FMS state space. Control policies for deadlock-free operation are characterized as partitioning cuts on this...

Observations on the interactions among deadlock avoidance policies and dispatching rules in automated manufacturing systems

In automated manufacturing systems, deadlock avoidance policies guarantee deadlock-free operation while performance controllers, such as dispatching rules, attempt to achieve performance thresholds. In an automated system, dispatching rules must work within the constraints imposed by the deadlock avoidance policy in order to assure continuing system operation, and thus, the deadlock avoidance l...

Deadlock Control of Automated Manufacturing Systems Based on Petri Nets - A Literature Review

Deadlocks are a rather undesirable situation in a highly automated flexible manufacturing system. Their occurrences often deteriorate the utilization of resources and may lead to catastrophic results in safety-critical systems. Graph theory, automata, and Petri nets are three important mathematical tools to handle deadlock problems in resource allocation systems. Particularly, Petri nets are co...
